    Sangiovese Blend

The 55 year old original vineyard planted by Dante's family. A traditional Chianti-style planting of 80% Sangiovese and the remainder made up of Malvasia Nera, Colorino and Canaiolo. All harvested together and after a long maceration in concrete, the wine was aged for 36 months in large Slavonian oak. The 2019 vintage was a mild and balanced one, and this wine fits that description well, after 6 years it feels as though it is now entering it's optimal drinking window, with the tannins beginning to melt and the aromatics being released. A deep red colour, the nose is equally deep, with rose, spices and leather. The palate is surprisingly bright, with an impressive acidity for its 13.5% that keeps the tannins moving and ultimately provides a welcome freshness to accompany the dried cherry, iron, bloody and meaty notes which sit alongside a brighter, fresher cherry fruit. The balance is masterful and the length superb. Classic stuff and proof that more humble IGT wines from the right estates, with less stuffing, oak and extraction can prove more enjoyable than the famous neighbouring DOCGs in the region.
