Domaine Des Canailles
Domaine des Canailles is located in Ternand, south Beaujolais, only 30 km north-west of Lyon in the area known as the Pierres Dorées (The Golden Stones) where the local honey coloured stone villages and hillsides sometimes earn it the title ‘little Tuscany’. Simon Pérot and Etienne Ubaud met in 2010 while studying wine business in Gaillac, southwest of France. After this Etienne pursued a career as a Sommelier while Simon decided to train in viticulture, first working at Domaine Des Grandes Vignes in the Loire Valley and then for Claire Naudin in Burgundy where he also completed his degree in viticulture and oenology. After going their seperate ways they reconvened in the Beaujolais in 2019 to found the domaine and have now just completed their 5th harvest.
The domaine has 8 ha of vines on granite soils between 450-550m elevation which have been certified organic since 2005 and farmed with biodynamics since Simon took over the vines in 2019. This part of the Beaujolais has a more varied geology with some schist, limestone and glacial moraine, but the pair believe that granite and gamay are a quintessential pairing in this part of the world and we tend to agree when it comes to wines like this of pure enjoyment, freshness and crunch.
